Austria’s Ybbs Mill Passes One Million Cubic Metres of CLT
Stora Enso reports that its Ybbs mill has delivered one million cubic metres of cross-laminated timber, a major industrial milestone for European mass timber.
Cross-laminated timber has moved far beyond the experimental stage. In June 2026, Stora Enso announced that its mill in Ybbs an der Donau, Austria, had delivered a cumulative one million cubic metres of CLT.
The figure is a company-reported milestone, but it provides a clear measure of how European mass-timber production has scaled. The Ybbs facility began making CLT in 2012 and now supplies digitally fabricated structural panels to projects in several regions of the world.
From raw panel to project-ready component
Modern CLT production is not simply a pressing operation. Large panels are machined with CNC equipment to create openings, edges, connection details and service penetrations before they reach the site.
That turns the factory into a direct extension of the design model. Errors in dimensions, orientation or connection data can be reproduced at full scale, while accurate information enables fast assembly and fewer site operations.
Stora Enso says Ybbs panels have been used in European projects as well as buildings in Svalbard, at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and in the Atlassian Central development in Sydney. The mill also applies protective coatings intended to support transport and construction-phase exposure.
What one million cubic metres signals
The milestone does not remove the challenges facing mass timber. Manufacturers must still manage forestry certification, energy use, adhesives, transport, fire design, acoustics and moisture.
It does show that CLT is now produced through repeatable industrial systems capable of supporting large international project pipelines. For developers, that can mean more predictable capacity. For designers, it increases the importance of manufacturer-aware modelling and early coordination.
The next phase of competition will be about more than panel volume. Producers and software platforms will be judged by how efficiently they convert a building model into optimized panels, cutting data, logistics packages and traceable project records.
Ybbs reaching one million cubic metres is therefore both a manufacturing achievement and a digital-construction story. The product is timber, but the scale comes from data, automation and repeatability.
