SITCA Launches a Global Science–Industry Alliance for Timber Construction

Launched in Vienna in July 2026, the Science and Timber Construction Alliance brings researchers and major companies together to study wood resources, carbon storage and the sustainable expansion of timber buildings.


A new international alliance is bringing scientific research and timber-industry capability into one platform. The Science and Timber Construction Alliance—SITCA—was launched in Vienna on 1 July 2026 by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis and founding partners from forestry, manufacturing and construction.

The official name is important: SITCA stands for Science and Timber Construction Alliance. Its objective is to build a rigorous evidence base for expanding timber construction while protecting forest resources and accounting correctly for carbon.

Founding participants include IIASA, Hilti, WIEHAG, binderholz, EGGER, Stora Enso and the Austrian Federal Forests. The mix reflects the questions the alliance wants to address: global forest availability, sustainable harvesting, product manufacturing, building systems, reuse and recycling.

Moving beyond simplified carbon claims

Timber buildings store biogenic carbon during their service life, and replacing more emission-intensive materials can reduce embodied impacts in suitable applications. But the total outcome depends on forest management, regrowth, processing energy, transport, design life, reuse and end-of-life treatment. A tonne of wood in a building cannot be evaluated responsibly without its wider system.

SITCA intends to use scientific modelling and industry data to examine how much timber construction can expand sustainably in different regions. That includes competition for wood between construction, panels, paper, energy and other uses. It also includes the time dimension: long-lived products and circular use can keep carbon stored longer and extract more value from the same resource.

The alliance is therefore not simply an advocacy campaign for “more wood everywhere.” Its credibility will depend on transparent assumptions, regional scenarios and peer-reviewed evidence that identifies both opportunity and constraint.

What the industry needs from shared data

Architects and developers need reliable environmental values at product and project level. Manufacturers need demand scenarios before investing in capacity. Policymakers need to understand whether procurement incentives align with forest availability and climate goals.

Shared research can also improve standards for accounting, reuse and circularity. A beam designed for disassembly may serve more than one building; a panel with documented composition is easier to assess for reuse; and verified sourcing data can connect the construction model to the forest-management context.

Digital design platforms have a practical role. Component-level models can carry species, grade, product type, certification, environmental data and future-disassembly information. When quantities and fabrication outputs come from the same objects, project evidence becomes easier to audit and aggregate without losing technical meaning.

A long-term coordination platform

SITCA’s launch does not create a new building code or certification, and it does not settle the global timber-supply debate. It creates an organised place where those questions can be investigated across disciplines and commercial boundaries.

For the timber sector, that may be more valuable than another isolated demonstration project. Scaling responsibly requires comparable data, credible carbon methods and a shared understanding of resource limits. SITCA has been established to provide that foundation.
