Theodore Roosevelt’s Mass Timber Library Opens in the Badlands
Snøhetta’s Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library opens on 4 July 2026 with a mass-timber and steel structure, rammed earth walls and a planted roof.
A major new mass-timber landmark is opening in the American Badlands. The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota, begins public opening celebrations on 4 July 2026.
Designed by Snøhetta, the 96,000-square-foot building is shaped as an extension of the surrounding landscape. A planted roof rises from the prairie and creates a walkable trail, while rammed-earth walls echo the colours and geological layers of the region.
Beneath that landscape is a hybrid structure combining mass timber and steel.
A presidential library with a different language
Most monumental public buildings announce themselves from a distance. This project is designed to recede into its site. The roofline follows the land, and visitors move through interior spaces framed by warm timber and heavy earthen walls.
The structural system reflects a pragmatic approach to low-carbon design. Timber is used where its weight, appearance and embodied-carbon profile provide an advantage; steel supports the spans and conditions where a hybrid solution is more effective.
The project team is pursuing the Living Building Challenge, one of the most demanding sustainability frameworks in construction. The library also describes itself as the only carbon-neutral presidential library, a claim that will ultimately depend on its verified construction and operational performance.
Why this project will be widely watched
High-profile cultural buildings can make unfamiliar construction systems visible to a broad public. Visitors may never use the phrase “mass timber,” but they will experience its scale, texture and structural presence.
For the industry, the building is also a coordination case study. Curved geometry, exposed finishes, hybrid connections and ambitious environmental targets require close integration between architecture, engineering, fabrication and site assembly.
That integration starts in the digital model. Every timber member needs a clear identity, geometry, connection and installation sequence. A project that appears to grow naturally from the landscape is made possible by highly controlled information.
The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library is not an all-timber building, nor is it a generic prototype. Its value lies in showing how mass timber can participate in a complex, nationally prominent public project without defining the architecture by itself.
